What is Knoppix
KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.
How it can benefit the Personal Telco?
By crafting a single CD distro of a bootable OS complete with the "official" PTP node setup (NoCatAuth, NodeSplashPages, SSID, port configuring, etc.) users will be able to have a PTP node up by simply booting the CD on most any wireless equiped x86 box.
The PTP Knoppix CD will boot up unattended as a fully running PTP node with no cat, the PTP splash page, apache running and able to allow users to get connected.

Morphix plug! (Alex de Landgraaf)
Browsing the net I came across this challenge, sounds interesting enough for a Morphix module imho. The modular distro now only supports prism2-cards (don't have wifi myself, will be a problem for this contest, but there are more than enough users requesting additions), this will be expanded with the coming release of 0.4 with the orinoco drivers. If someone has a list of tools & scripts that they want in it just let me know, and we'll move from there (will do nearly anything for a six-pack
Then again, if the sputnik-thingy below does what you guys want, you can ignore my remark
Be sure to check out http://www.sputnik.com/products/gatewaydownload.html "The Sputnik Community Gateway software available on this page will turn any computer system into a 802.11b wireless access node, enabling roaming Internet connectivity at broadband speeds for any member of the free Sputnik Network."
I poked around the Sputnik sit a bit but so far the limitation on types of cards and the licensing seem to be more of a hinderance than Knoppix with NoCat, Host AP and the like would have. Its an interesting thought but not exactly as robust as we will need things for this particular challange. Its defintley worth a look though. --tomwsmf
As of January 2004 the Sputnik Community Gateway software is no longer available on the Sputnik site. No source code is now available for any Sputnik product, unless you're an OEM and want to build the Sputnik captive portal into the firmware of your AP. I've pinged Rob and Schuyler about this, since the original Sputnik code was simply a repackaged version of NoCatAuth, and I wonder seriously about there being no source published by Sputnik any more. --firstname.lastname@example.org
You can still get the Sputnik code on Sourceforge:
You can download a iso for Sputnik Community Gateway v1.1 here: http://www.gonzo-wireless.co.uk/dump/Sputnik
