Maintenance and System Log
2013-09-17: Stopped by today to get the rest of the node back online. The node was unplugged for a while, starting around February 2012. The alix and bullet were plugged back in around May 2013, but the soekris at the front of the building was still disconnected. There have been some wiring changes inside, and in fact there is a parallel network waiting for us to connect to, but we aren't sure how to connect to it from the office space in the back of the building where our gear currently connects. I spent an hour or so today getting everything working again today. I whitelisted a half-dozen devices, and fixed the SSIDs on the soekris radios (changed from www.personaltelco.net/down to the standard www.personaltelco.net). The PoE injector for the soekris has disappeared, presumably it's in the ceiling somewhere, out of sight and reach. If we have to power cycle, we might have to reboot the building! --RussellSenior.
2010-10-06: Node was unplugged about a week ago due to abusive traffic by a user. Took the opportunity to decommission the Soekris gateway and replace it with an AlixCab and a Bullet M2HP. The Soekris at the front of the building was unaffected and remains in operation. Regained remote access and management of the network. Continued thanks the Labarre for hosting this node! --RussellSenior
2008-12-05: Noticed that the Engenius 200mW PCMCIA radio had not been seen in a while. Did some diagnosis remotely and ultimately rebooted. However, 'metal' did not come back up. Stopped by today to power cycle. Still not seeing the missing radio. It is visible from the operating system, but not over the air. Maybe should try a replacement. --RussellSenior
2008-09-03: Got a call this afternoon indicating a report of an outage. I went by later to check and it appears that the issue is a bad end on the cable from the switch up into the storage area. If I manipulate the cable, the link light occasionally goes on and then immediately off again. If the other end was the problem, I don't think that would happen. I let Gary know about my diagnosis and said that Dennis could take care of it tomorrow. --RussellSenior
2008-04-18: Visited today to check on a long outage. I had email'd but not heard a reply. Dennis said today he'd received my email, but his reply had bounced and he hadn't gotten around to trying again. I power-cycled and it came back up. I won't wait so long next time. --RussellSenior
2007-12-28: Installed a second soekris device outdoors near the front of the building, with coverage up and down Milwaukie Avenue. --RussellSenior
2007-07-20: Have recently reconfigured this node with Metrix Pyramid 1.0b5 and wifidog. Business owner also interested in adding an additional rooftop device. --RussellSenior
2006-10-13: Responded to a message forwarded to ops@lists.personaltelco.net (tardily) by DonPark. Node has been non-functional for a couple months. Internal network had been renumbered during a VOIP installation, breaking the static IP on the soekris. I got a serial console on the device, reset the root password, and set about patching things up. One tricky bit, /etc/resolv.conf is a symbolic link into /var, which gets unpacked from /etc/var.tgz during bootup, so to fix up /etc/resolv.conf I unpacked the tarball, modified var/local/etc/resolv.conf and tar'd it back up again. Did a final reboot-and-test and it was working when I left.
Notes
The storage area where the node used to reside has been finished into a meeting room. The Alix is sitting on a wire shelf near the ceiling and some additional network gear. Beware of the ethernet cable marked "eth0" coming out of the ceiling. That is believed to have 48V PoE power, which will do bad things to the Alix if plugged in. Please don't plug it in! In fact, cut off the tip, tape it over (being careful to avoid short circuits) and stuff back into the ceiling for maximum safety. I am not sure how the PoE injector is situated, but it is not visible anywhere I had access to. --RussellSenior
