Agenda
The Internet Service Provider (ISP), Integra Telecomm, who has been donating the internet connection at NodeArborLodge has informed us that they intend to discontinue their sponsorship of the network as of March 2014. The Personal Telco Project is trying to see if there is a community of network users (and/or others) that are willing to cooperate to take over the funding of the internet connection. If not enough funds are available, then the network will have to shut down.
If there are enough funds available (probably less than $100/month, total ... many hands make light work!), we can even expand the footprint of the network by deploying more of the wifi devices on willing homeowners buildings, sharing the internet connection even further. We have the devices available ready for use, we just need places to put them!
This meeting is intended to be an opportunity for community members interested in preserving the network to come together, to learn more about the network, how it operates, about how very little money is involved, really, and how everyone can benefit from pooling their resources in this way. Personal Telco Project personnel will be on hand to answer questions and to listen to attendees and to help facilitate this cooperation.
Look for a red canopy near one of the picnic tables in the park. There wil be a large Personal Telco Project banner attached. We'll be hard to miss!
Thanks for your support!
Notes
- Personal Telco personnel set up a 10x10ft canopy over a picnic table, with a large Personal Telco sign and waited. For two hours. During which *no one* showed up. I guess either our outreach efforts really suck or that no one who found out about it actually cares. Possibly a combination.
- We lost our DSL connection sometime between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. this morning. We called Integra during the meeting, and they reset some things on their end, asked us to reset our end, which we couldn't do directly because we don't have access to the devices, but I was able to text the home owner where the equipment resides, and they reset it around 6 p.m. Thanks homeowner!
- Brainstorming other ideas for community outreach, possibly doing a mailing to area residents, something else (add your ideas below)?
