"Okay somebody claims that a reg tweak in windows can change an Orinoco Silver card into AP mode.

in /hkey/local machine/software/orinoco/driver/config00xxxx change APMODE=0 to APMODE=1

he clarified... on the OS: Windows 9x/NT4 SP6 card: Orinoco Silver PC24E-H-FC

Change configname regword,APMODE,ownSSID,DESIREDSSID,OWNCHANNEL nb hkey_local_machine\software\orinoco\driver\config0x"

From a post by JimThompson to the MailingList:

  • I said I'd check on the plane, and I did (I got 2 extra hours due to a delay in KC.) This is the first chance I've had to respond. There is just no way that (just) setting "Registry Variables" will enable BSS mode for a Lucent/Hermes 802.11b device. You *have* to load the Lucent equivalent of what Prism calls "Terniary" firmware, and this code can't be stored in 'permanent' memory (flash). There also appears to be no chance for a "HostAP" like driver, despite the fact that the programming models for both MACs are largely similar (PDAs/PDRs, BAP registers, 'ports' on the MAC that can be in various modes, etc.) WDS mode, however appears to be supported. I have no idea when I might get to a Linux BSS driver for Lucent cards. Goodness knows that I have more than a a few people asking for it. I'll let this list (and others) know when I have something that can be tested. It will, however, be binary-only. Not much I can do about it.

Sorry it is so easy to turn a lucent card into AP mode. For more information check our discussion at Netstumbler ( http://forums.netstumbler.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=575 ).
