Meeting Details

New Business

  • NigelBallard found a typo in the web pages, static front page. KeeganQuinn fixed it.

  • The next ubernode will be in an undisclosed mall. It will support the newer IEEE 802.11g standard as well as 802.11b. There will be 3 APs to cover the whole mall.
  • Jordan joins us from the City Repair Project (http://cityrepair.org). This organization helps neighborhoods build community projects. There is a definite interest in working with the PTP to build connected public spaces. Jordan will join the mailing list to get in touch with us.

  • Greg joins us from the Town of Halsey. This town has 600 people with a central grain silo. The town wants to go wireless. They are fluid enough to be able to raise funds to get the infrastructure going. They lack easy access to fiber and the only ISP covering the town has a lock on the price. They are looking for a solution. Greg will join the mailing list to get in touch with us.
  • CapposCafe is now the first node to provide service via 3 different wireless network protocols: 802.11b, 802.11a, and Bluetooth. Nigel donated an 802.11b to Bluetooth device and TomFitz is working to get it functional. Last Friday, JasonMcArthur also provided and installed an 802.11a AP.

  • TomHiggins: Quick connect fliers get a facelift: http://wsmf.org/ptp/QuickConnect2003b.pdf

  • DonPark suggests some "awards" for various things. Ideas from the group include:

    • Most Used Node
    • Most Supportive Reporter
    • Best Local Services
    • Most Abusive on IRC
    • Longest Running Thread
  • Winter holiday party; see HolidayParty2003 wiki page. Topics:

  • ITEC Coordination - Dec 10th & 11th; see ITEC2003 wiki page. The wonderful people at Centric Events have very kindly offered us space and an opportunity to put on a good show at ITEC Portland 2003.

  • DonPark is going to look into using the PTP van.

  • TomHiggins will print up some new QC card and WC sheets. DonPark suggests talking to DarrinEden about printing needs.

  • KeeganQuinn: We have access to 3 complete sets of 38-40 GHz band wireless equipment made by P-Com. It's good for LOS links, and is very fast, capable of sustaining a 45mbps link up to 25 miles. The equipment is fairly large and needs space indoors; the outdoor units are heavier than our usual equipment and may not work well on existing masts. One set could be used to link Rocky Butte and Council Crest, in theory. Unfortunately, the band is licensed so we will likely not be able to afford to actually use this equipment.

Old Business

  • RobertPetersen: "How do we market to newbs?" Work in progress.

  • TomHiggins: Databases delayed, requires DonPark. Postponed.

  • TomHiggins: Suggests the use of available machines that are not useful as APs as community-accessible client devices. Consensus is that it's a good idea and that there is a need for such machines to be able to run the X window system.

  • NewCloneArmyBox standardization; see NewCloneArmyInstallMethodology wiki page. KeeganQuinn estimates an automated installation image is about a month away.
