- There was no in-house internet at the time we went in there (22 Mar 2002). An office across the street agreed to be their wireless uplink. Two Linksys WAP11s will make the bridge from one block to the other. Then a third AP will be installed to create a PTP node.
Do you think we really need 3 APs to get this done? Would one good AP (maybe an RG1000) with an external antenna be able to cover Heaven? (If we can cover PioneerCourthouseSquare from 8 floors up with a Zcomax and an antenna, and the office across the street has LOS at all, it should be much easier and cheaper. any single ap solution would only cover at the very most, two tables on the inside of heaven. there are obvious differences between heaven and starbucks/pioneer square: starbucks is principly composed of glass; heaven is a long, narrow room in a building with relatively thick walls (although that might not matter as much as previously thought, given the library range test). another concern is that access is being provided to a wired network that consists of 5 kiosk-like installations and one computer for employee use. to do this without the relatively dumb wap11 bridge (which essentially acts like an ethernet cable), we would need a linux box, or something similiar, to act as a wireless client and bridge to the wired network, which would no doubt be as much as a pain in the ass to configure and probably less reliable (given the age of the boxes we've been using in the past). also, it's a lot easier to tell the heaven guy "go to officedepot and get two wap11s," as compared to saying "first, go to freegeek and get a pentium linux box. then, find a compatible pci->pcmcia bridge, and a wireless card. prop up the linux box in the window sill, or buy another antenna and some more lmr400 and another pigtail. that said, it's a good thought; if we had musenki or soekris boxen, it probably would be relatively easy. --AndrewWoods
