Maintenance and System Log
2014-11-19: Replaced alix2 with a new one (for simplicity), because new one had nice wall mount bracket. The alix had been beaten up a little and antenna snapped off, which explains the poor coverage. Replacement didn't get DHCP, which was weird, set a static addr instead. Might want to go back and test that. Fresh Pot closes at 6pm, I just got barely got in the door for Phase 1 of WeeklyMeeting20141119. It works much better with an antenna!
2013-02-07: As of yesterday afternoon, the DSL is out. I stopped by about an hour ago and checked on it. The DSL modem had been reset, but it comes up in bridge mode, which is correct at this location (the alix2 gets the public ip address). The staff have been advised to contact Integra to pursue repair. Meanwhile, it ought to be possible to connect to our network across the street within the cafe. The alix is configured to start working when the DSL is restored. I offered to provide any assistance required. --RussellSenior
2013-01-27: Updated alix to r35318 with linux kernel version 3.7.4 and IPv6. Some months ago, in late November 2012, installed a new alix with a radio installed (from MetroFi's network) to replace the old linksys router that had been there before. A second wireless interface on the same radio is used in client mode to connect across the street. IPv6 has been operational here for that time. This update was to bring the node in alignment with other alixs that have been getting updated in the last few days. --RussellSenior
2011-09-15: Lost contact with the node again, stopped by to check and found that the switch on the powerstrip was in the off position. Replaced the power strip with one I had on hand the the more convivial orientation of the outlets, powered it back up. There was a renewed thought about using a low-power bullet to replace the edimax. Need to work out how to configure it most auspiciously. Would be nice to have it bridge, but that implies different firmware and a cooperating 'other end'. There are several ap's across the street. Need to work out which is most appropriate to connect to. --RussellSenior
2011-07-22: Lost contact with the node, stopped by to check on it. Turns out, our gear had been unintentionally unplugged. Plugged it back in. Noted a need for a different kind of power strip, with the plugs oriented differently. Two wallwarts were occluding most of the outlets. --RussellSenior
2009-12-28: With ChristopherChen and AaronBurt, replaced the old NuCab with an AlixCab while also switching over to a new DSL service from Integra. There was some talk about putting a low power Ubiquiti Bullet in to replace the old Edimax client bridge. Just need a patch antenna with the right connector. --Russell
2007-08-24: A recent Debian upgrade on this nucab resulting in the obliteration of a local tweak to /usr/share/nocatauth/gateway/bin/initialize.fw which allowed the third NIC to bypass NoCatAuth. I have reconstructed what I believe was there before, appending the following near the end of the script:
# NAT for local wired network iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE iptables -t filter -I FORWARD -s 10.11.104.0/22 -j ACCEPT iptables -t filter -I FORWARD -d 10.11.104.0/22 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
The third NIC in this case connects to the Edimax client-bridge that connects to the Mississippi network. --RussellSenior
2007-05-09: Responded to an outage report. Found the AP reset and the nucab malfunctioning. I reconfigured the AP, moving it to channel 11. Took the nucab home and discovered the disk was failing. I dd_rescued it onto another drive, losing a couple unidentified files on /home, cleaned the nucab up a bit and reinstalled this morning around 9am. Back in operation. --RussellSenior
2006-01-27: RussellSenior fixed up a broken /boot/grub/menu.lst. We'd neglected to add a --timeout option to the "terminal serial console" line, which resulted in the boot stalling at grub, waiting for user intervention. Service was out for about 4 hours, but ptp was still available from missnet across the street.
2006-01-11: RussellSenior, CalebPhillips, BenjaminJencks and DavidJencks installed an ISA 3c509B NIC in the nucab, added "3c509" to /etc/modules (it came up as eth0), moved cat5 cables so that eth0 goes to DSL, eth1 goes to local AP, and eth2 goes to the edimax client, and assigned eth2 10.11.104.20 on the MissNet.
2006-01-10: (RussellSenior, BenjaminJencks, and I) Brought the NuCab up and down a couple times in an attempt to install another NIC. No NIC on hand fits (insufficient PCI slots). Installed an Edimax AP in Client Mode to connect to neighboring NodeMississippi at Naya. (TylerBooth, MichaelWeinberg, RussellSenior, and BenjaminJencks) Ran CAT5e to this device (located behind coffee bar). Also installed a serial terminal. (AaronBaer) Installed sudo accounts for RussellSenior, BenjaminJencks, and CalebPhillips. - CalebPhillips
2005-10-09: Created this page in accordance with NodeAudit. Also, Node seems to be functioning just fine.
