DailyWireless is planning to construct a mobile access point on a Bike. A battery-powered AP will be placed inside the saddlebags of a bike. A WET-11-like device with a high gain antenna supplies the backhaul to nearby PersonalTelco nodes. PersonalTelco is Portland's "freenet". The Interstate Max line, opens May 1st 2004. The 5.8 mile line runs from the Rosequarter, near the Oregon Convention Center to the Expo Center, near the Columbia River. Dozens of federal and local officials and hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected.

The bicycle-mounted hot spot would traverse the Interstate Max line. Spreading the word. With free WiFi.
Demos and Content will be demonstrated. The PTP Bike could provide temporary WiFi access when none previously existed. It will be used primarily for outdoor events, providing computer access in Parks. It would be a community asset, free to use by members.

(1) The goal: The goal is simple. Be there. PTP flyers, etc. Some folding chairs and a table would be good. Later today I'm biking and wardriving up Interstate and see if we can't reserve some space.

(2) Location: Interstate and Lombard. The free Northstar PTP node is one block away. Jason McArthur's GPS map of the 200 mw Northstar Node: (www.personaltelco.net/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=sitesurveys) shows good coverage. The bike acts as a repeater for the Northstar Node. I'll talk to the cafe about some (un)official space near the cafe where we could plug (or unplug) nearby.

(3) Attractions: Here's what else is going on at this location: (http://www.trimet.org/promotions/eventguide.htm) Art and Sole Bicycle Transportation Alliance City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development City of Portland Office of Transportation City of Portland OptionsMobile Columbia Slough Watershed Council Flexcar Metro Parks and Greenspaces Metro Fish and Wildlife Habitat Metro Natural Gardening Metro Recycling Oregon Operation Lifesaver ReDirect Guide Regional Travel Options TriMet TriMet Hybrid-Electric Bus

Entertainment 12:30-1 p.m. Time Capsule Dedication with City Commissioner Jim Francesconi (at The Nite Hawk Cafe) 1-2 p.m. Trashcan Joe 2-2:15 p.m. Break 2:15-3:15 p.m. Trashcan Joe

Food & beverage The Nite Hawk Cafe (serving free refreshments 11 a.m.-4 a.m.) The Northstar Coffee House

(4) Gear: Rick Landahl has generously donated a 6 db folding antenna with an SMC connector as well as a pigtail with a Lucent MC connector. I plan to use the following setup:

  • (a) Easiest: One Linksys DWL 800AP AP/Repeater with SMC connector into 6db folding panel or 16db Yagi. Battery powered. (b) Harder: Linksys DWL 810+ Wireless Bridge with Ethernet into a Linksys DWL 800AP AP/Repeater. These two units would be powered by one 6 volt battery (c) Local Node: A Lucent USB Client (with 23db or 16db antenna) is plugged into laptop for last mile. The laptop runs nocat or uses an external AP (the Linksys DWL 800AP)

(5) Content: I'm pouring my panorama photos into a street guide based on http://www.nysonglines.com model. That will be mixed with other links and resources.

(6) Demonstrations: FWD(Free World Dialup (www.freeworlddialup.com) with their eyeP Phone Lite (http://www.eyepmedia.com/eyePPhoneFWD.htm) seems to work well on low-end laptops. It can even dial a cell phone (but not visa-versa). We will be making phone calls to the ends of the line. Also showing other citycloud maps and services used in theWireless Athens Project.

While the location at Lombard and Interstate may not be ideal as (say) the Expo Center, the Rose Garden or the Interstate Culural Firehouse, it would be the simplest since we don't need to install a node.

How does this sound to everyone? Want to volunteer? I don't have a plan yet, but here's a tentative volunteer schedule you could fill out to staff a table on Interstate and Lombard:
