Here are the requirements to become a WirelessCommunity in the PersonalTelco network.

• A Community Hub - this is some form of omni-directional antenna (possibly a sectorized or tilt down antenna as well).

• A Community Router (hopefully running a CaptivePortal system) to provide routing around the community network, and make sure you have redundant paths to the internet.

• A Community Gateway - an internet connection of some form.
• An Inter Community Gateway - at least one link to another part of the wireless network. This is what will allow you multiple paths to the internet in case your Community Gateway goes down.

I'm seeing WirelessCommunity used in two different ways here:

1. As a "city-wide" effort, for example SeattleWireless

2. As a local node, for example Bob's node located at Foo St & Bar Ave in Portland.

If it is confusing to me, might it confuse others as well? --BillHolmstrom

• This a legit complaint. The confusion exists because of the original terms I used to define the part of local node. My current "vison" is that a WirelessCommunity is an entity like SeattleWireless or PersonalTelco. The local node needs to be called a NeighborhoodAreaNetwork (I've also heard people in the wireless industry refer to them as Micro Cell's) . Unfortunately NeighborhoodAreaNetwork doesn't roll off the tip of your tongue all that cleanly and it's hard to make NAN into a wiki word (though you can do this: ["NAN"]). If you'd be willing to help clean up the web site that'd be great, also please sign what you write so I know who I'm talking to :-). -- AdamShand

How about just a WirelessNeighborhood? A WirelessCommunity would them be made up of several WirelessNeighborhoods. --BillHolmstrom
