Personal Telco Press Coverage
Google News Search on the PTP... as we do not always get around to posting the newest stuff up here in a timely fashion. April 2005 - Oregonian - WiFi, Portland style Ted Sickinger writes "Portland connects to top billing for wireless access". Done by the people who do the "Best Places to Live in America" for Money Magazine, PortlandOregon collects the "most wireless city in America" award. Apparently most of the thanks goes to PersonalTelco ... hooray! Tracy Baker writes "Wireless Network Worries", a fairly friendly discussion about community wireless networking and how ISP's feel about it. NigelBallard is quoted and NodeDb is mentioned. Nancy Gohring writes "Wi-Fi spreading Internet access to the masses". A year in review about wireless. A brief mention of Personal Telco's scuffle with T-Mobile over the Pioneer Square node. Donna Rosato writes "Bringing free wireless access to the people". A nice article with coverage from NycWireless, AustinWireless and NigelBallard of PersonalTelco. ... apparent gap while Adam was away Fobbman writes "Starbucks Clashes With WiFi Hobbyists Over Airwaves". A follow up on the Oregonian article about the Tmobile and PioneerCourthouseSquare. Over all people were very supportive and a couple of the SpecialOps team made sure that things didn't get too skewed during discussion. Joe Smith interviewed NigelBallard and DonPark for a two minute prime time news spot. More great publicity for the PioneerCourthouseSquare node. Clips are only in Windows Media format right now, MPEG should be coming soon.
Jeffrey Kosseff and Eric Hand write "Wireless channel use sets up turf battle". Eric Hand happened to be at one our MonthlyMeetings and heard us discussing the problems we were having with the recently deployed T-Mobile/Starbucks AccessPoint conflicting with ours. It's a controversial but pretty friendly article. Rick Merritt writes "Public 802.11 nets raise tech, business concerns" which has a brief mention of the list of WirelessCommunities we maintain. AdamShand writes "One laptop. One deck. One beer.". A silly little intro to wireless networking. Ben Charny writes "Cable companies cracking down on Wi-Fi". A pretty friendly look at the situation with Time Warner and NycWireless. A quote from AdamShand appears at the end. Brooke Singer writes "Where do you want to go today?". She pimps the SatelliteTruck as a "Temporary Telecommunication Autonomous Zones" to the art crowd in New York. Very cool. RobFlickenger writes "Broadband Block Party". A great article by one of our own! Rob gives a general overview of what community networking is doing and what it hopes to do in the future. Good stuff. Francis X. Gilpin and Scott Harrell write "URL, Interrupted". A story about the up and coming wireless with lots of talk about how the Telco's are anti-competitive. NigelBallard is one of their quoted sources. Arik Hesseldahl writes "Wi-Fi Anyone?" a general blurb about WiFi and public access providers. A brief mention of PersonalTelco as the maintainers of the list of public communities. AlizaEarnshaw writes "Personal Telco goes mobile with its expansion strategy". A great article which covers the recent purchase of our SatelliteTruck as well as quotes from local businesses who sponsor nodes. Andy Giegerich writes "Internet service has cool scruples". A nice article focusing on the partnership between EasyStreet and PersonalTelco. EdSutherland writes "Is Wi-Fi Getting Too Crowded?" He brings up some interesting points on 2.4Ghz ISM band being overloaded. NigelBallard is quoted at the end. AlizaEarnshaw writes "Personal Telco now in South Park Blocks". Another lovely piece from Aliza covering the emergence of the new South Park Blocks node. Michael writes "Community Wireless Networks in the UK". Slashdot points to a Guardian article in which PersonalTelco and FreeNetworks get a brief mention. Joe Smith interviewed AdamShand, AlHooton, NigelBallard, DonPark and LucasSheehan for a 1.5 minute piece on the 6:00PM news. Overall a very nice piece. NigelBallard writes "This is the first hostel in the USA, possibly the world to have free high-speed broadband wireless". AlizaEarnshaw writes "Combine outdoors and cyberspace downtown". A very nice little plug for us all. Great stuff, they think we're cool! chezxx writes "Their site will tell you all you need to know. And man, they have some great technical links on all things open source!" Cool, a listing in the alternative guide to Portland! Christopher Locke writes "Broadbanding Together". This is a great article, there are some minor technical inaccuracies but the overall mentality of article is very positive and supportive. Great stuff. BrianWestbrook interviewed AdamShand live and on the air from the Pioneer Courthouse Square node at 7:40AM. The interview was about five minutes long and was great coverage during the morning commute! Jeffrey Kosseff writes "Personal Telco sets up free Net access". It's nice to finally get some press in the Oregonian but I (AdamShand) haven't been quoted that out of context for quite a while and the StealingBandwidth refrain is getting particularly tired, especially given that this was about the PioneerSquareNode which is powered by business T1's. AlizaEarnshaw writes "'Geeks' unite in a quest to make wireless world". AdamShand got his mug on the front page and it's also a pretty nice article about what's going on in Portland with PersonalTelco. There are mentions of EasyStreet's Rich Bader helping out and supporting the project. John Marcotte writes "Guerrilla Radio", an interview with Brewster Kahle of SfLan and AdamShand about barriers to community network progress. Erika Jonietz writes "Unwiring the Web" a nice write up of community networkings mainly focusing on NycWireless though NigelBallard and PersonalTelco are mentioned. You can read a scanned copy of the article (page 1, 2 and 3). Tyler Hamilton writes "Wireless `Robin Hood' espouses free online access". A decent write up of TawNag with a nice mention of PersonalTelco and other WirelessCommunities. It's a shame yet another reporter jumps on the sensasionalistic bandwagon though. Christopher Ambrosini writes "Seeds of Change", a general overview of what community networks are about and the problems they face. A brief mention of PersonalTelco as a group which "aspires to organize the collectives and provide information to others". "The Future of Wireless", a panel of "wireless visionaries" talk about the future of the Internet and eireless connectivity. The full version isn't available online, just a list of panelists and a some blurbage.. Jim Krane writes "Digital activists want to share the Internet's wealth -- er, bandwidth" the main point of this article seems to be fear mongering in the business world that we're "stealing bandwidth" and the ISP's and Telco's aren't gonna like that. "Spare some bandwidth? Free wireless Internet movement shares the wealth" is another nice write up about community networks. Greg Wright writes "Bootleggers bring broadband to some neighborhoods" for the Gannett News Service, which has papers all over the country. Covers DanRichardson and the PlayDay. Dick Kelsey writes "WiFi Spawns Free Net Access", AdamShand gets yet more press time in this article! Way to go! Timothy posts "A Motley Crew Beams No-Cost Broadband In New York" which is pointing to the recent Village Voice article. There some fairly supportive and interesting comments. Peter Meyers writes "High Speed, Freed: Motley Crew Beams No-Cost Broadband to New York". This is mainly about NycWireless, but AdamShand does get mentioned towards the end. George Kelly writes "Boomeranged by Ricochet" and talks about Metricom going bust and no longer being able to get his wireless internet fix. PdxWireless is Mentioned as an alternative! Andy Giegerich writes "From Wire to Wire(less)". We got front page of the business section, a picture and everything! Nice to finally get some local press. Andrew Blum writes "Wireless activists bring the battle over public space to the airwaves. ". A nice article about the grass roots nature of community networking. GlennFleishman writes "The Revolution May Be Wireless". Glenn came down to Portland for the WirelessSummit and then went back home and wrote about it. Tim Pozar of BaWug talks about how "Neighborhood Area Networks" are changing (and will change) the way people connect to the Internet. We're list in in wikipedia, another really cool wiki project! Xix posts a bit what PersonalTelco is up to. BrucePotter posted "Where's Your Nearest Wireless Access Point". We got a nice plug as well as SeattleWireless. SamChurchill wrote "Community LANS" and mentioned PDXWireless.org. BrucePotter writes "As the Wireless World Turns". Our first press!
